Playsuits get Royal Ascot’s stamp of approval

Jumpsuits have become a big trend both on and off the catwalk, and now they have been introduced as an acceptable item of clothing for Ascot’s Royal Enclosure.

Women will be allowed for the first time to wear dressy jumpsuits in Royal Ascot’s most elite area, once an exclusive space reserved for The Queen and other members of the Royal family, if they are of full-length to the ankle and have straps of one inch or more.

This follows the addition of trouser suits to the event’s strict dress code in 1971 and confirms the rising trend of the one-piece as a stylish occasion outfit.

“Fashion and style are an important part of the Royal Ascot experience for all of our customers,” said Juliet Slot, Commercial Director of the 304-year old event, which takes place each June.

“The inclusion of jumpsuits as part of the Royal Enclosure dress code recognises our customers’ fashion-forward taste and reflects our awareness of seasonal trends.”

Offering a style that can go from casual to smart with just a pair of heels, rompers are been increasingly favoured by celebrities and stylish women alike as designers update the trend with new textures and shapes.

They were ubiquitous during the summer of 2016, making an appearance at red carpet awards, fashion events, weddings and on the high street. In fact, sales of jumpsuits increased by 57% at Selfridges last summer, while John Lewis saw an increase in sales of 279% of own-branded styles in 2015 according to Vogue.

For SS17, jumpsuits will come with fit and flare cuts, a utility feel and reinterpreted volumes.
