Acne open its biggest store in Los Angeles
Dec 19, 2013
Acne Studios has opened up shop in historic Los Angeles landmark, the Eastern Columbia Building. Spread across 450m², the Californian flagship marks the brand’s 40th and biggest unit to date.
Constructed in 1930, the building is a prime example of Art Deco architecture in the City of Angels. For the occasion, Acne has released a limited edition scarf to celebrate.
Jonny Johansson, artistic director at the company, installed an in-store franchise of his favourite Stockholm café, ilcaffè. Located around 15km from Beverly Hills - in an area more highly populated with cinemas than shops - this new store is a mecca for the brand’s die-hard fans. ‘I don’t think this is the most amazing area to do business, to be honest, but I don’t think that’s relevant. If it were our only store, yes, that would be relevant, but it is not,’ said Johansson to WWD. “When you have a solid foundation, some people buy art, some people buy cars, some people buy expensive couture; we did this. It might be successful in the long term, hopefully.”
Inside is plenty perforated aluminum shelving, pink flooring and blue carpet. Belgium artist and friend of the brand, Carston Höller, was commissioned to create a giant mushroom sculpture which welcomes customers at the front of the store.
This year Acne has opened stores in Paris, London and Osaka.
