Dov Charney, CEO of American Apparel, is delighted with the company’s results for the last quarter which came to a close at the end of June. “"In the month of June 2012, more merchandise was sold to customers than for any June in our history”, he said in a statement released alongside the quarterly results.

The brand has come through a difficult period of company and shareholder turmoil, but showed a clear increase in sales of 12%, at 149 million dollars (121 million euros). Taking a closer look at the figures, its wholesale has grown by 10% and its retail and online sales have rocketed up 16%.

American Apparel also stressed that during June its store sales reached 1.6 million US dollars, whilst in 2010 this figure had fallen to 1.18 million from a high of 1.73 million in 2008. This upward trend has made the brand think about extending its retail network. It’s now looking at the possibility of opening new stores and said that it could potentially open around 50 stores within the next three years.

The brand today has some 250 stores in around 20 countries, but had to close 29 during the previous financial year to redress the balance.

Although the brand did not release any figures concerning profits, it’s looking this year at earnings before interests, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of between 32 and 40 million US dollars, compared to 14 million last year and -9 two years ago. This result would above all let the company renegotiate its debt.
