Bal Harbour Shops recently revealed its plans to expand its mall for the first time since the 1980s citing increased competition as the reason. The expansion will include the enhancement of already existing retailers Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, and the welcoming of Barneys New York.

Bal Harbour is expected to add 400,000 square feet to the mall, a public park, and the city’s first ever Barney’s New York, which appeared in renders of the expansion. One of the parking lots will be converted to a pedestrian plaza and a new entrance to the mall that should reduce traffic.

The expansion project is projected to cost $400 million as reported by the Miami Herald. According to Whitman Family Development CEO and President, Whitman Lazenby, the mall should not require public funds to be developed.

Retail competitors of Bal Harbour Shops include stores in Miami Worldcenter, Brickell City Centre, the Design District—which has been one of the more popular luxury destinations this year—, and the upcoming $4 billion American Dream Miami expected to open in five years.
