The Italian luxury label belonging to the PPR group opened its fourth Shanghai store last week, its biggest yet in China, where it already has 21 stores. This store is situated in Bund, the famous and historic quarter of Shanghai, within the Yifeng Galleria shopping center, a building dating back to the turn of the last century which has just undergone renovations and which houses other fashion and luxury brands. Covering an area of 530 square meters, the retail space is spread over 2 floors. The first level hosts a wide range of the brand’s products: handbags, luggage, men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, as well as footwear, small leather goods, eyewear and a selection of products for the home.

The second floor, which is entirely dedicated to art, will house exhibitions all year long. Spread over 2300 square feet, works by young Chinese artists will be presented in non-commercial exhibitions which will cover a range of themes and various different artistic forms, under the supervision of Chinese art expert Gu Sheng. It’s the brand’s very first boutique to have a space entirely dedicated to art. The project represents a first, developed especially for Shanghai but which will soon be exported in other forms to Milan, amongst other places.

"We are particularly happy to introduce to the public young up and coming Chinese artists. Beyond the shopping experience, we now offer our customers the opportunity to discover exciting new art works during each of their visits," said the brand's artistic director, Tomas Maier, in a statement.

The fashion house has a long-standing tradition of collaborating with artists and designers, as it has done with this store. Beyond that, however, this project will allow it to strengthen its ties with the Far East, which accounts for more than half of its total revenues (682.6 million euros), with sales in the Asia-Pacific region reaching 239 million euros while in Japan they have risen to 136 million. This collaborative formula will also enable the brand to have a unique presence in the city, as CEO Marco Bizzarri points out: "while Bottega Veneta continues to expand in China, we are in constant pursuit of ideas and tools that enable us to increase brand perception by developing authentic relationships with the communities in which we are present".

This new point of sale carries the Bottega Veneta name, as designed by Tomas Maier for all its stores. From hand-crafted storefront windows to door handles dressed in leather, tailor-made luxury is a must. Other special details include: louvered windows of palm wood and steel, the aerodynamic forms, display counters equipped with retractable presentation trays lined with felt, suede wall coverings, furniture embellished with mohair, and carpets in pure wool from New Zealand dyed to specifications. The tones are natural, muted and matte, with tan and brown accents, a palette both subtle and sophisticated.
