The new £1.9m Sunbridge Wells underground scheme in Bradford in Northern England surpassed expectations in its first 10 days with around 20,000 people visiting the leisure-to-shopping centre.

Linking the area from the new City Park to the Arndale Mall, the project, which had originally been planned to open in 2014, finally opened on December 10 and attracted 8,000 visitors last Saturday alone.

The scheme is an interesting one as far as retail trends are concerned as it goes against the trend for ever-larger super-malls in out-of-town locations. Instead, it mixes the history of the Sunbridge Wells tunnels complex with an upscale market environment and small boutique-style stores. It also has hundreds of antique pieces on display, donated by local museums and galleries.

Its leisure/dining options, which include a Laurel and Hardy-themed bar, a tapas bar and a traditional pub, mean it will be a draw to get consumers into the city centre and the Arndale Mall during the evening as well as during the day.

The tunnels were originally a Medieval quarry and were last used as a 1960s nightclub. They occupy three floors of underground space and had previously been closed for nearly half a century after the club shut its doors.
