Europe’s first enclosed shopping centre, Brent Cross,

Hammerson

currently owned by Hammerson and Standard Life Investments UK Shopping Centre Trust marks its 40th birthday.

Opened on 2 March 1976, after 19 years in the making, the shopping centre has revolutionized the London retail industry. Being the first American-style shopping destination in the UK, Brent Cross became an example for upcoming shopping centres across Europe.

Fenwick, John Lewis and Marks & Spencer, the centre’s department stores, are still situated in the centre. Together with some of the original brands, including Boots, W H Smith, Mothercare, Miss Selfridge and Russell & Bromley.

After forty successful years, the centre remains a key location for retailers and has secured an impressive number of exclusive store openings, including worldwide, European and UK firsts. Recently, make-up brand Urban Decay opened its second London store and Apple has opened a new format store, a UK first, at Brent Cross.

David Atkins, Hammerson CEO, said: “Following to its launch in 1976, Brent Cross Shopping Centre, rapidly established itself as the capital’s leading retail destination and has continued to outperform expectations. Now in its fortieth year the centre remains very much at the heart of retail and still welcomes the world’s leading brands. A pillar of the North London community, we are delighted to mark this significant milestone and to celebrate it with its customers. As we continue to progress well with our redevelopment plans, I am confident that Brent Cross is set to enjoy another successful 40 years.”

Brent Cross has over 120 shops and will celebrate its anniversary with a number of special events at the site.
