British trade shows stretch out their schedule this season

Scoop International moved its dates forward by three weeks, disrupting this season’s schedule of British trade shows. Last year’s time-frame was tight, running from 7 to 19 February, but this year British buyers will see the season kick off with the Scoop show in London on 19 January and wind down a month later in Birmingham, when Moda closes on 18 February.

Now the season’s first event, Scoop International, chose to advance its dates to fit better with the schedules of buyers for its targeted premium and luxury markets. With its dates of 19 to 21 January, the young and chic trade show fills the time slot left vacant for the first time between the Berlin and Paris events. For the second consecutive year, Scoop will occupy two venues, both contemporary art galleries, welcoming more than 400 collections of womenswear and accessories, mostly high-end labels.

The next event chronologically will be Jacket Required, which shares the same majority shareholder as Scoop and Moda, ITE Moda. Scheduled for 5 and 6 February, the menswear show will take place in a new and larger venue in the Shoreditch neighborhood, although the number of exhibitors will be the same. A former brewery, “The Old Truman Brewery” site will welcome nearly 140 largely premium brands, with a mix of classic, denim and street styles.

It’s worth noting that menswear show Stitch London, which traditionally competed with Jacket Required, canceled its winter session. Failing to attract enough exhibitors this season, its organizers are nonetheless hoping to relaunch in the future by partnering with another, larger trade show, although no deal has yet been signed.

Speaking of large-scale events, womenswear returns with the arrival of Pure London, from 9 to 11 February. This season, the largest London trade show has revised its look.

Its visual appeal, physical layout and groupings have all been rethought with an eye toward “back to our beginnings.” More compact (600 exhibitors versus the usual 900), the show is broken into five distinct areas.

No longer divided into lingerie, swimwear and junior, women’s ready-to-wear will be highlighted in four areas under the new plan: Agenda, Allure, and Aspire (all new), plus Spirit, the more urban segment that has been retained.

For the first time, accessories and shoes will be exhibited together in a “Footwear & Accessories” area. The trade show, once again held at Olympia Hall, seeks to provide its expected 9000 buyers a more easily navigated visit.

Finally, as always, it’s further north in Birmingham that the season of British shows comes to a close. This major event, which already featured womenswear, menswear, lingerie, swimwear, shoes and accessories, will add a new segment to its offerings. Moda Noir will showcase industry leaders in evening wear and occasionwear. The number of exhibitors in all sectors should remain at about 1400.
