Cashmere, Liz Earle and Dyson hairdryer are all favourites at John Lewis

Cashmere, partywear and Dyson’s new supersonic hairdryer were the standouts at John lewis in the seven days to December 10.

But while they powered ahead, overall sales dropped as the week fell between the seasonal peaks of Black Friday and the final week of December.

Cashmere has proved strong at John Lewis

The department store retailer referred to the “different shape of trade for the Christmas period” that has been driven by the rise of Black Friday in recent years as its seven-day sales fell 2.1% to £151.8m.

It also said that with Christmas Day being on a Sunday this year, shoppers have a full extra day to buy their Christmas goods “and are likely to leave their purchases until the last minute,” as has happened in previous years.

But Fashion sales still managed to rise 1.2% year-on-year with womenswear the strongest category, rising 7.2%. That strength was down to partywear and to cashmere, which enjoyed its biggest ever week for a 13% rise.

Beauty, Wellbeing and Leisure rose 2% with Liz Earle gift sets and the Creed Aventus fragrance both proving popular.

Cashmere also boosted Menswear with own brand cashmere products helping the category to a 3.3% rise.

And while electricals were weaker due to a lack of discounts, the electricals gift of the year appears to be the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer, which was the retailer’s bestselling product in this directory last week.
