Chanel’s beauty division has made its foray into augmented reality with Lipscanner, an app designed to recognise and virtually test out lipstick shades.

Chanel's new Lipscanner app

The app was developed entirely in-house and is available on the Apple Store in around 20 countries including France, the US, and Japan. The app enables users to take a photo of a colour in a magazine, a social media network, a item of clothing,  or a face and be offered a product which is the closest to it from among the 400 Chanel brand lip products.

As the result of a collaboration between Chanel’s CX Lab (connected experience lab) and  the brand’s makeup design studio, which created an exclusive algorithm, Lipscanner is also able to discern the finish of a lip product as matte, satin, or gloss.

In addition, the app’s Virtual Try On function enables users to virtually test out the identified lip product on their own lips. The app then provides the user with a direct link to purchase  their new desired lip product from Chanel’s e-commerce site.

Recently, beauty brands such as Essie nail polish (part of L’Oréal group) and Anastasia Beverly Hills, a brand specialising in eyebrows, have also launched their own augmented reality apps. This also acts as a way to boost makeup sales, which have been strongly impacted by the global pandemic and its succession of lockdowns.
