2019 is shaping up to be a year for bold bridal looks, unconventional accessories and social media-inspired moments, a new report has found.

This year’s wedding trends are influenced by the rise of Instagram as a platform to showcase the experience, not only providing inspiration for other brides-to-be but also becoming a peak personal brand moment with professional photography, custom hashtags and ‘made for Insta’ imagery.

According to fashion search platform Lyst, wedding outfits are now surpassing Christmas looks in terms of searches, making wedding fashion an attractive opportunity for retailers.

The UK-based search engine for online fashion analysed the shopping behaviour of more than 5 million shoppers a month, who searched, browsed and bought fashion across 12,000 designers and stores online.

It found that dresses with pockets (both for brides and wedding guests), personalised trainers and pre-owned gowns will gain momentum this year as shoppers move towards more sustainable and comfortable alternatives for the big day.

With the likes of Lupita Nyong’o and Priyanka Chopra donning white suits to media events in recent months, searches for white suits have increased by 43% over the last three months. Meanwhile, searches for hot pink formal dresses are up 45% year on year, fuelled by the oversized tulle dress worn by Jodie Comer in Killing Eve.

As for accessories, it seems wedding guests will be favouring bright hair bands over traditional pastel-coloured hats and feather fascinators, with searches for ‘diamond headbands’ increasing by 78% in the week after the Oscars, when Rachel Weisz wore a vintage jewelled headpiece from Cartier.

Further, pearl earrings of all kinds, big or small, statement-making or understated are set to be one of the biggest jewellery trends of the year, with searches up 109% since January.
