El Corte Ingles has named a new head of retail. The Spanish group of department stores has promoted Victor del Pozo, currently deputy director of sales.

The newly created role will see the executive lead all activities related to the sales, purchasing and marketing departments. Del Pozo has been also named recently as patron of Fundación Ramón Areces, which owns 37% of El Corte Ingles, after the departure of Juan Hermoso.

The appointment of Victor del Pozo had the unanimous support of the company’s board of director. Del Pozo will become the second most important executive in the company and right-hand man of president Dimas Gimeno.

The corporate change comes as El Corte Ingles enters a new phase of updating the business model of its department stores chain. The recent announcement of a possible fusion with its Hipercor business joins rumours of the launch of a new outlet format.

The Spanish retail giant’s financial year ends at the end of the month, and is estimated to achieve an increase in net profit of 34% and a 4.3% rise in sales.
