Germany’s US textile exports on an upswing

German textile exports continue on the rise. After a turnover of €28 billion (about $31 billion) in 2014, they are expected to grow by 1.5% this year.  The US export market is developing a particularly positive performance, say the German associations Mode+Textil and GermanFashion.

Thomas Rasch, director of the textile association - GermanFashion

In the first half of 2015, Germany’s US exports increased by 24% to €93.8 million (about $106.5 million). “The US ranks as Germany’s15th largest export market, and there is still room for improvement,” says Thomas Rasch, Director of GermanFashion.

For this reason, both organizations are now calling for the TTIP agreement to be reached - the free trade deal between the European Union and the United States.

High tariff rates, inconsistent product quality, labelling requirements and other bureaucratic barriers are hindering the growth of German exports to the US. “We are hoping for the TTIP to facilitate the trade between countries and are therefore supporting it wholeheartedly,” says Rasch.

The TTIP, which is currently being negotiated, would highly benefit German textile exports to the US. According to Uwe Mazura, Director of the German Textile and Fashion Industry Association, German medium-sized companies would profit mostly from an agreement. Currently, they cannot afford the existing tariff rates, he says.

According to Mazura, today’s export regulations are completely incomprehensible. “Why do women’s parkas have a higher import duty than men’s?”
