Givenchy is expanding its universe with a beachwear line. Called Givenchy Plage, this capsule collection of ready-to-wear and accessories for autumn 2023 has been designed to take you from "city to sand," drawing inspiration from the house's archives, and in particular from the beachwear line launched by the house's founder Hubert de Givenchy in the 1950s.

The collection includes twenty or so pieces for women and men that are easy to mix and match or to integrate into one's wardrobe. A refreshingly casual style with simple elegance. The brand offers a wide range of desirable items, from striped cotton shirts and shorts to short dresses, tops, sarongs, hooded caftans and terrycloth shorts with embossed logos, linen tops and macramé skirts, knitted dresses and sun-dyed denim shirts. And of course swimwear.
While exploring the archives of the LVMH Parisian luxury house, the brand's creative director Matthew M. Williams "came across images of the designer and founder's first swimming costumes, unveiled at a show in New York in 1952," the brand says in a statement, explaining that, the swimwear was a huge success in America and therefore Hubert de Givenchy "did not stop presenting beachwear over the following decades."

It is this heritage that the house is reviving this autumn. Even more so, some of the pieces from the collection feature the slogan "Beach Club 52" or "Givenchy Beach Club Cap Ferrat 52", referring to another source of inspiration. That of the Provençal farmhouse Clos Fiorentina, which the founder/couturier bought in 1985 in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, in the south of France.
The designer was inspired by the The French Riviera, "where the light is different" for the collection's colour palette, as he explains in the release. "I wanted to explore this lifestyle through light and colour, particularly the pearly pink facades so typical of this region." In addition to Givenchy's signature black and white, the collection features pale pink, sky blue, lilac and light grey, as well as washed denim and sailor stripes.

The line also includes a series of one-piece swimsuits and bikinis, bags including woven straw baskets, bobs and caps, as well as rubber flip-flops, sandals and some jewellery. Prices range from 275 euros for a pair of pool sandals, to 430 euros for a bob hat, 690 euros for a pair of Bermuda shorts, 750 euros for a shirt, and up to 1,390 euros for a terrycloth dress with embossed jacquard.
For the first time, the house is paying particular attention to the traceability of its clothes, labeling certain swimwear models with QR codes that inform customers about the garment's care instructions as well as the supply chain in terms of materials and manufacturing.
The Givenchy Plage collection has been available since mid-April in the brand's boutiques, including its online store, and will be rolled out until mid-May, the company says.
