The British company has two shopping malls in Spain, in Asturias and Zaragoza. The latter, called Puerto Venecia, is Spain’s largest shopping and leisure centre at 206,000 sq mt.

Joining Intu from CBRE, where he was national director of retail since 2007, Barbany takes over as the company increases its presence in the Spanish market. Barbany holds an MBA in Business Administration and Management from the ESADE Business School in Barcelona and was a member of the board of directors of CBRE in Spain, as well as the EMEA retail board.

“We are delighted Alex has chosen to lead Intu’s exciting Spanish business and his arrival further strengthens our highly experienced and growing team. Given his expertise and proven leadership skills, we are confident his appointment will ensure continued success for Intu and our partners in Spain,” commented Nick Hodson, who has been acting as managing director for Spain since 2014.

At present, Intu Spain manages assets worth €1.3bn, with a growing pipeline of projects in development.
