A 1.8% increase in sales to £242.04 million wasn't particularly impressive at John Lewis Partnership in the latest week as the clearance sale continued. But in the seven days to January 4, at least its John Lewis department stores chain performed better than its Waitrose supermarkets.

In fact, total sales at the department stores operation were up 3.3% year-on-year in the first full week of its clearance sale. Not that every part of the business did quite so well, but at least there was good news for Fashion as that department was the standout performer during the period.

Fashion sales were up 6.4%, with specific womenswear sales rising as much as 10% and womenswear accessories surging by 22.6%. Sales of beauty, wellbeing and leisure, which also come under the Fashion banner, were up 4.3% and menswear sales rose 2.5%.

There was less pleasing news from elsewhere at the chain however, with Home department sales down 0.5%, continuing an almost unbroken run of sales falls for this particular mega category. However, textiles & home accessories sales were up 3.4% and sales across gifts, cook & dine were up 3.4%.

Electrical and Home Technology sales were up 4.4% this time. Communications technology sales rose 0.4% and sales of electricals were up a healthy 6.8% as customers shopped for personal care and smart home products.
