PARIS, France - Monday night celebrated the opening of Chanel’s London flagship store and largest boutique to date. Previously located at 26 Old Bond Street intimate space, the French fashion house now occupies 1,000 square metres at 158-159 New Bond Street in the heart of London’s luxurious Mayfair district.

The flagship carries the entirety of Chanel’s goods ranging from handbags, shoes and clothing to jewellery, perfume and make-up. Peter Marino was brought in to design store following his work on the label’s recently opened Avenue Montaigne store in Paris.

25 pieces of art were commissioned to decorate the store, with inspiration taken from Coco Chanel’s Paris apartment on Rue Cambon. The store features an elevator that connects the three floors as well as a central marble staircase decorated with gold and bronze accents and a larger-than-life sculpture by French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel of Chanel’s iconic strands of pearls.

In an interview with British Vogue, president of fashion at Chane Bruno Pavlovsky said he hoped that the London flagship would strengthen the brand’s “special relationship” with the United Kingdom, mentioning of the recent success of The Little Black Jacket exhibition that took place at the Saatchi & Saatchi gallery. Chanel also recently acquired Scottish wool maker Hawick and chose Scotland as the back drop for its autumn 2013 Métiers d’Arts show.
