Louis Vuitton unveils LV x NBA menswear capsule collection

Oct 12, 2020

One cannot fault Virgil and Vuitton for timing. On the morning after the Los Angeles Lakers were crowned the new NBA champions, Louis Vuitton unveiled a new LV x NBA menswear capsule collection designed by its menswear artistic director, Virgil Abloh.

The collection is part of a three-year partnership between Vuitton and the National Basketball Association, or NBA, whose season climaxed Sunday night when the Los Angeles Lakers steamrolled the Miami Heat to capture a record-tying 17th NBA title.
The LV x NBA collection goes on sale on November 20; and features a full wardrobe of clothes, divided into three sections: Travels and Transits, a key area of the whole Vuitton DNA, which features gray cashmere tracksuits with a basketball player graphic; Game Arrivals, which includes a blue hooded leather jacket, monogram jeans and t-shirts; and finally, Press Conference, with tailored suits and dress shirts.

“Fashion muses aren’t predictable. Ideas of luxury can be found in the sports world and its champions as much as in traditional forms of artistry. This collection celebrates the cultural contribution of basketball and its diverse characters, and the idea of relatability as a force of unity today,” said Abloh in a release.

Adding in footnote that by relatability he meant: “the lionization of accessible or familiar imagery in luxury, employed to invite a sense of inclusivity.”
Back in January 2020, Vuitton revealed the official Trophy Travel case for the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy, awarded annually since 1977 to the winners of the NBA Finals.
“Motivated by the exchange between French craftsmanship and American sports, Virgil Abloh created a limited clothing and accessories line uniting the emblems of the two institutions. The collection adapts the designer’s codes with the iconography of the basketball universe, and honors the values of relatability and inclusion key to Virgil Abloh’s vision at Louis Vuitton,” the Paris-based luxury brand added.

The capsule turns out to be a rather synergistic meeting of two famed logos – LV and NBA, like in a Varsity jacket with the NBA logo at the front, and the LV initials on the back. While the new basketball player graphic is used in trim suits and even moccasins in the shades of Vuitton graphite print.
Abloh also created a classic monogram print backpack with NBA blue trim and the NBA red, white and blue logo.   While rapper-worthy jewelry employs the NBA logos as pendants in a playful blend of sport and craftsmanship.
