British retailer M&S announced in 2014 plans to open a 6,100 square metre flagship store on The Rokin in Amsterdam, but the project has been put on ice for the time being as the company confirmed on Thursday the sale of the unit.

“The plans have changed considerably since we first looked at the store and this has provoked interest from other parties. We’ve accepted an offer we couldn’t turn down as a result,” said an M&S spokesperson.

It is understood the space has been acquired by Canadian department store group Hudson’s Bay Company, which recently revealed plans to roll out up to 20 stores in the Netherlands.

M&S’ disposal of the flagship store in Amsterdam comes just a month after its Dutch CEO, Marc Bollard, stepped down after six years in the role.

According to the spokesperson, Dutch customers can continue to shop at the stores in The Hague and on the Kalverstraat in Amsterdam, as well as online.
