Spanish fashion chain Mango joined some of fashion’s biggest names on Monday at the Met Gala in collaboration with fashion consultant Sofía Sanchez de Betak. Decked out in an orange gown that playfully referenced the fruit that gives the brand its name, Sanchez presented the hero piece of a new Mango capsule collection inspired by the event’s camp theme.

This year’s Met Gala was co-chaired by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, artists Harry Styles and Lady Gaga, tennis player Serena Williams and Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele. The theme of the evening, and the fashion exhibition opening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art this week, was ‘camp’ - an aesthetic that is halfway between extravagance and ingenuity.

The concept also informed the design of Mango brand ambassador Sofía Sanchez de Betak’s dress, using the mango fruit as the inspiration for the colour selection, fabrics and silhouette.

Mango is the first Spanish high street store to be featured on the Met Gala red carpet. The dress will also be one of the few designs customers will be able to get their hands on, launching as part of a capsule collection in Mango’s online stores and at its NYC flagship store at 561 Broadway from Tuesday.

“With this type of project, we want to inspire our clients, show them other facets of the brand, bring them closer to other experiences and share our milestones,” said Jan Rivera, Mango image director in a press release.
