Buitelaar joined Marktplaats in 2009 and has been the chief commercial officer at the company since 2016.

Prior to joining Marktplaats, Buitelaar started her career as an Internet marketer at telecom company KPN. She was also the marketing and communication manager at KPN subsidiary Simyo.

Annemarie Buitelaar, incoming CEO at Marktplaats, said in a statement: “It is a great challenge to take over the helm at this moment. Both in Belgium and the Netherlands our platform shows good growth, but [success] doesn’t come naturally. The challenge for the coming years is that we have to keep innovating faster every day, by applying new technologies but also with smart partnerships. Together with the strong Benelux team, I will focus on increasing the success of all our users, I look forward to this with great confidence.”

Marktplaats was founded in 1999 and was the first Dutch website allowing consumers to buy and sell products online. Since 2004, the Amsterdam-based company has been part of Ebay. Today, the platform attracts 2.1 million visitors per day and an average of 350,000 new products or services are offered on the website every day, ranging from clothing and collectibles to cars and furniture.
