In an official announcement the Russian Fashion Council stated that, having closely monitored the evolution of the outbreak of Covid-19 over the past month, the organisation has decided to cancel the fashion week, initially planned to take place in the Moscow Manege from March 31 to April 4, 2020.

The Council had initially developed a set a preventive measures for the event in collaboration with Russia’s Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare and Health, but ultimately determined that, considering the most recent available data on the virus’ propagation, cancelling the fashion week was the best option.

The organisation also decided against simply postponing the event, due to the difficulty of predicting when the current health crisis will have died down.

“This was a difficult decision, given the effort and resources that have already been invested in the preparation of the shows by both fashion houses and ourselves. But there was no alternative, because we are talking about the health of colleagues, guests and participants,” said Russian Fashion Council president Alexander Shumsky.

“Up until the last moment, we considered the possibility of shifting fashion week to later dates, but under the current circumstances it is impossible to predict the development of the situation with the coronavirus, so we are transferring all of this season’s activities to an online format, which is contactless and safe,” concluded Shumsky.

The Russian Fashion Council and the national Fashion Fund will therefore host a series of online events on Russian fashion e-commerce platform Aizel in April-May 2020. In this way the organisations hope to support Russian designers and give them the opportunity to showcase the collections they would have shown on the catwalk during the cancelled fashion week.

The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia is the latest in a series of fashion weeks to have been cancelled due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, including those set to be hosted in Shanghai, Melbourne, Beijing, Seoul and Tokyo.

Further details concerning the online event being organised by the Russian Fashion Council will be revealed at a later date.
