Moynat relaunches Russia leather production

Russia leather is a rare, water-proof type of leather traditionally used in bookbinding and perfumery. It has a distinctive scent, and it is processed starting from horse, reindeer, goat or veal hides. It was especially popular in the XVIIIth century, when it was regarded as one of the world's most precious types of leather, before going out of fashion a century ago.

A year and a half ago, Moynat, well-accustomed to working with rare leather, and its Creative Director Ramesh Nair, decided to relaunch the label's production of Russia leather, partly starting from leathers that were over 300 years old, in collaboration with the Tannerie Roux, a tannery belonging to the LVMH group.

The rare, distinctively fragranced leather - a mix of incense, smoked leather and myrrh -is now featured as 'imperial calfskin' in the new Moynat collection, notably the Gabrielle handbags. These will be available in stores from early 2017, alongside other new models such as Moynat's first backpacks and a series of mini-vanity cases.

In parallel, the French trunk-maker will shortly launch a new line of clutch-bags and small leather goods designed by French artist Mambo. The latter has already created a decorated trunk, available at Moynat's corner within Parisian department store Le Bon Marché.

As for Moynat's own store network, the label's President Guillaume Davin has announced the opening of a new shop in Taiwan in early November, after those in New York in March and Seoul at the end of August. "The plan is for three to four openings a year," he confirmed, "in about ten of the world's major cities, each time with a directly owned store and one within a major department store." After Taiwan, in 2017 Moynat is expected to showcase its trunks and leather goods in a Tokyo and London department store.
