New York Street Style, fashion made in Brooklyn

Published

'New York Street Style, fashion made in Brooklyn', is conceived as a 'full immersion in the Mecca of world fashion', and analyses Brooklyn's trends and fashion codes through 175 urban fashion pictures, complemented with expert tips.

The 240-pages book was produced by journalist Aya Sacharow (Time, Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, etc.), graphic designer Shawn Dahl (formerly the chief editor for the food and drink section of Time Out magazine) and photographer Sioux Nesi, and it is a complete guide to Brooklyn style.

Offering advice from the experts – designer Karyn Starr; Jenn Rogien, costume supervisor for the TV series Girls and Orange Is the  New Black; Jessica Ricards of cosmetics magazine Shen; designer Debbie Hardy and the creator of Bird magazines, Jennifer Mankins – the book decrypts the art of maximalism (consisting in mixing motifs, polka dots and checks in the same outfit) and the codes of tribal style, sustainable fashion, streetwear and DIY fashion.

The work is punctuated by interludes on the art of wearing proper shoes - "even the trendiest of Brooklynites does not wear stiletto heels to take the underground or cycle across the bridge" - on hats or "natural and organic" make-up, and it also offers practical advice on how to travel light, how to style your own wardrobe, and how to age happily with it.

At the end, the book features a 20-page guide which identifies the best food and shopping destinations in Brooklyn, compiles an inventory of authoritative blogs, provides tips for the best second-hand and garage sale buys, and lists a series of books and films about Brooklyn.

The book is published in the US by Harry N. Abrams Inc. (as 'Brooklyn Street Style'), and in France by La Martinière (as 'New York Street Style, fashion made in Brooklyn'), the latter priced at €25.
