“We’ve been waiting for this for a long time,” declared Stephen Urquhart, president of Omega, at the opening of a flagship store on 5th Avenue in New York; a beautiful location for the horologer which has decided to present all of its lines there.

Nicolas Hayek, pdg of Swatch Group which owns Omega, announced in 2000 at the inauguration of the first Omega boutique in Zurich that in 10 years there would be fifty stores under the brand’s name. He wasn’t far wrong, the new 5th Avenue store will be the fifty first store in the Omega network. A “unique opportunity”, according to Stephen Urquhart who continued to say that there “were no plans regarding openings relating to global economic conditions.”

Sophisticated, luminous and luxurious, the new store is definitely appealing. Modern without being shocking, it pays homage to the glorious history of the horologer. Founded in 1848 it has become one of the key names in Swiss watchmaking. Technical ingenuity and bold designs for the world of sport gave birth to: the Seamaster, the ambassador for which is none other than James Bond 007 himself, the Constellation, totally redesigned this year, or even the Speedmaster- more commonly known as the Moon Watch. Launched in July 1969 it was the first watch that was capable of being fired into space without risk of damage to the glass or mechanisms. To celebrate 40 years of this model Omega is releasing a limited edition version in steel or platinum that will only be available in the new boutique in New York.

The limited edition Moon Watch will be an exclusive in a store which will stock every line and model of the brand without exception. Stephen Urquhart explained this by saying that “New York is the most cosmopolitan city in the world and it was a logical step to present all of our products.”
