According to the European Outdoor Group (EOG), sales in 2014 for the European outdoor market recorded a 1.2% growth in value and a 1.4% rise in volumes. In its 'State of Trade' report, the European association of the outdoor industry's players revealed that in the multi-brand channel sales reached €4.83 billion, while retail trade reached €10.2 billion.

According to the EOG, sales in 2014 for the European outdoor market recorded a 1.2% growth in value and a 1.4% rise in volumes.

Yet the situation in Russia has had an effect on the whole European results. Outdoor sales in Russia in fact dove, falling 20.2%. EOG stated that "excepting Russia, the European market grew 2.7% in value and 2.3% in volumes, an increase close to the rate of inflation."

In 2014, the three most dynamic markets were Germany, the UK/Ireland and France, with growth ranging between 2% and 3%. In Southern Europe, economic recovery continued with a growth of up to 2.5% in Spain and Italy. With the exception of Finland, the country most affected by the Russian decline, Scandinavia recorded a growth of about 3%. Altogether, Eastern Europe registered regular growth, reaching nearly 3%.

In terms of products, as in the year prior, the footwear category recorded the most sizeable expansion, rising 2.8% in value and 4% in volume. The category reached wholesale revenues of €1.3 billion, with retail sales amounting to €2.7 billion.

Clothing, the largest category, rose by only 0.1% (€2.5 billion wholesale and €5.3 billion retail). However, the Russian downturn and the warm autumn and winter temperatures have distorted this figure significantly.

The backpacks and luggage segment grew approximately 2% in both value and volumes. As for equipment, climbing gear recorded value and volumes increases of approximately 2.5%. The tents segment rose by approximately 2%, while accessories rose 2.8% in value and 2.1% in volumes.
