PETA buys one share in Hermès

PETA has reportedly purchased a single share in French fashion house Hermès so that its representatives can "attend and ask questions at the company's annual meeting,” a spokesperson told Vogue, explaining that the move would permit PETA's representatives to “put pressure on the company to end its sale of exotic-animal skins."

The move follows Jane Birkin's request this week to Hermes to take her name off the crocodile handbag created and named after her in the 1980s.

PETA is putting pressure on the French fashion house to stop its production of goods made with animal skins. The company brought evidence of animal cruelty practiced during the production of Hermès bags to Jane Birkin who responded by demanding her name be removed from the atelier’s iconic bag. The evidence allegedly shows “cruel practices endured by crocodiles during their slaughter for the production of Hermès bags,” according to Vogue UK.

The company has reportedly purchased just one share in Hermès stock, enough to allow it “to attend and ask questions at the company’s annual meeting,” according to a PETA spokesperson who spoke to Vogue UK. Hermès International issued a statement denying that they were associated in any way with the farms mentioned in PETA’s investigative report.

The statement reads: "Hermès respects and shares [Birkin's] emotions and was also shocked by the images recently broadcast. An investigation is underway at the Texas farm which was implicated in the video. Any breach of rules will be rectified and sanctioned. Hermès specifies that this farm does not belong to them and that the crocodile skins supplied are not used for the fabrication of Birkin bags."
