The Parisian catwalks were awash with color at the city's haute couture shows on Monday, with Schiaparelli and Dior stealing the show.

Bertrand Guyon's debut collection for the recently re-established Italian house Schiaparelli was a strong one, in all senses of the word. Colors were bold and spirited, ranging from ruby reds and hot pinks to mermaid tones and zesty citrus hues. Clashing was also one of the collection's main features, with loud beige plaids offset by pink furs and embellished blouses teamed with light, shimmery skirts.

There was also an emphasis on the mixing and matching of fabrics to create texture and depth. Brocade coats, sequin tops, jacquard suits, cashmere trousers, minks and tweeds all held their own alongside one another, blending together to achieve an overall effect of unconventional elegance. Meanwhile quirky accessories such as whimsical and imaginative sculpted tiaras kept things light and playful.

Lightness was also one of the key elements over at Dior, where the new collection was presented in a colorful, semi-transparent structure inspired by a Pointillist church. Creative director Raf Simons' collection was fluid and breezy, pitching languid, relaxed lines and insouciant forms. From flowing, semi-sheer maxi dresses to ankle-length swing coats, the focus was on movement and grace.

Trousers were cut wide while coats were oversized and asymmetrical, often featuring deep pockets and bell sleeves. Waists were kept nipped in for a feminine silhouette, while cloak-type jackets and chainmail adorned dresses gave a nod to the Middle Ages. Fabrics, too, were rich and luxurious, ranging from taffetas and creped silks to velvets with the odd touch of regal fur.
