Pentland Brands announced a major appointment at its Berghaus operation this week with Paul Anderton joining as head of category for product and innovation. The company said he’s “highly regarded in the industry [and] brings a wealth of UK and international experience,” with his appointment reflecting the brand’s “ambitious growth plans”.

Based with the Berghaus team at the Pentland Brands North East HQ in Sunderland, in his new role he’ll be working closely with head of design James Hodgson.

Anderton has a strong track record in outdoor brands. He held senior European product management roles for two major names — Patagonia and Columbia Sportswear. But his experience in outdoor or sports labels goes even deeper than that with time spent at Hurley, Nike, Quiksilver and Salomon over a 30-year period. Interestingly, in joining his new label he's actually coming back to the company where he first worked in the specific outdoor sector with time spent in the Berghaus sales team starting in 1999.

He’s joining at a crucial time for Berghaus with Pentland having earlier this year announced a major investment to double the size of the product team and support the brand’s long-term business strategy. That included expanding its outdoor lifestyle offer, and putting a renewed focus on “creating ground-breaking products for the specialist outdoor sector through its Extrem range, continuing a thread of technical cutting-edge innovation that stretches back to the early 1970s”. It has also built a dedicated ‘Sprint Team’ to bring certain lines to the market quicker than through standard product development processes.
