Petition targets Macy's for Ivanka Trump sales

Women’s right’s group UltraViolet has distributed a petition demanding that Ivanka Trump’s line of merchandise be pulled from Macy’s stores due to allegedly poor labor conditions at overseas production facilities that are said to offer unsafe conditions and meager compensation.

There's a petition out for Macy's to cease its relationship with the Ivanka Trump brand - Ivanka Trump

Within the first 24 hours of distribution, the petition received 30,000-plus signatures, which has continued to grow to over 63,000 in less than one week. UltraViolet strategically made their recent announcement during President Trump’s “Made In America” week with via Twitter, urging readers to add their names.

According to an investigation conducted by the Washington Post, the majority of Ivanka’s clothing and accessories are produced in impoverished areas of Bangladesh, Indonesia and China. Trump recently added baby, activewear and affordable jewelry to her roster of existing products that include handbags, footwear and casual and dress attire for women. Macy's (both in-store and online) primarily focuses on dresses, shoes and handbags for $200 or less.

Since her father has been in office, Ivanka has been keen to promote herself as the “White House’s leading advocate for women,” a phrase she pairs with what some consider an embarrassing paid parental leave policy.

UltraViolet’s co-founder, Nita Chaudhary, said in a statement: “If Ivanka Trump is serious about serving as a ‘champion’ for working moms, she can start by living up to the values she claims to have by ensuring the women workers who make her brand’s products have access to safe, humane working conditions. To stand on the stage at the Republican National Convention and claim to millions of Americans that you are an advocate for working mothers ― while exploiting women in countries abroad to make a buck — is a shameful display of hypocrisy.”

At this juncture, representatives for both the Ivanka Trump brand and Macy’s have yet to comment.
