Pepco’s budget chain Poundland is continuing to invest heavily in its stores this year with the creation of hundreds of new jobs and opening/relocation plans that will also see expansion for the Pep&Co clothing line.

Of the roughly 50 stores being opened or relocated, around half will be brand new and will include stores in London and Glasgow. The rest will see the chain moving from smaller sites to larger ones or extending existing stores.

It will all add between 750 and 800 jobs, Poundland said, without going into detail.

The move continues its opening activity from 2022 that saw a number of extra-large stores debuting with expanded fashion and beauty spaces.

The first five stores in the programme (ranging from a smaller ‘local’ branch to a megastore) will open their doors within a few weeks in Barnet, Aldershot, Castle Bromwich, Glasgow, and East Dulwich.

The Glasgow Crown street site will be a supersized branch covering 18,380 square feet.

The extent of the firm’s investment in the new/upgraded stores programme can be seen from the fact that it’s planning to open 34 branches in total up to June and is in talks on leases for other sites.

It opened 18 stores in the last quarter of 2022.
