Hammerson revealed on Wednesday that its annual general meeting will still go ahead of 28 April, albeit virtually.

The shopping centre owner, whose portfolio of leading retail destinations include Brent Cross, Grand Central and the Bullring, is observing the government’s ban on all non-essential travel within the UK.

Gatherings of more than two people have also been banned to fight the spread of the coronavirus. More than 422 people have died due to the infectious disease in the UK, and 8,077 have tested positive.

In light of the impact of Covid-19, the company has cancelled pay increases for its board and executive directors.

Hammerson is the latest commercial property operator to reduce the pay of its directors to protect liquidity amid rising uncertainty about the duration of the Covid-19 pandemic.

All 12 Hammerson shopping centres in the UK have now closed, with the exception of essential retail like pharmacies and food shops.

The company said the virtual AGM will allow shareholders to attend and participate remotely. More details about the event will be provided in due course.
