The non-profit, UK government-funded The Great British High Street initiative aims to provide resources for high street regeneration and celebrate innovative work going on in high streets across Britain.

It has now opened nominations for its Great British High Street Awards 2016 and this year, more categories have been added. One of those is "Best Shop on Twitter", for which GBHS has teamed up with Twitter, which will be looking for independent shops that are using the platform innovatively to promote their business and drive footfall to their local high street.

Another new category is the Rising Star Award, which is looking for high streets that are taking their first steps turning around their fortunes, GBHS said. The competition is searching for the best high streets in the UK and asks the UK public to help by voting for the winners. Last year saw 230 high streets enter and almost 200,000 people voted. The final winner was Bishy Road in York.

High Streets Minister Andrew Percy said: “Last year’s Great British High Street competition was a massive success with a record number of entries and winning high streets seeing a surge in shoppers. Our local high streets remain the life and soul of towns, villages and cities across the country and I’d encourage as many as possible to enter this year’s competition which is set to be even bigger and better.”
