US casualwear brand Timberland and Hong Kongese streetwear label Clot have unveiled their first joint capsule collection inspired by traditional Chinese art, created solely using natural and sustainable materials, including 100% bio-sourced cotton.

The two brands have devised a fresh take on the Timberland three-eyelet boat shoe, created in 1978, decorating it with brightly coloured, embroidered oriental motifs, and adding hand-sewn leather uppers. The eco-designed sole uses 34% recycled rubber and the model’s leather is guaranteed by the Better Leather label. The new model is already available for sale in two colours (black and wheat) for men and women.

“The embroidery is very much an ode to ancestral hand-stitching culture and, in more abstract fashion, also tattoo culture, in which dragons and ancient Chinese motifs are featured on bare skin,” said Edison Chen, founder and creative director of Clot.

In addition to the boat shoes, the capsule collection includes a ready-to-wear line in tan shades, consisting of five workwear-style items inspired by outdoor apparel: a hoodie, a long-sleeved and a short-sleeved t-shirt, a canvas jacket and a pair of work trousers in duck canvas.

Clot is a streetwear label created in 2003 by Edison Chen, that draws inspiration for its collections from its Chinese roots. It has previously collaborated with brands like Stüssy, Nike, Sacaï and Medicom Toy.
