The earlier fall of Easter this year helped results at British department store retailer John Lewis, where sales rose 20.9% in the week to April 4, up to £85.26m.

Results were also positive in comparison with Easter week a year ago, the company said. Online sales did especially well, with sales up 28.2%.

The area that achieved the highest increase on last year was Fashion, where sales rose by 22.6%. Menswear and Sportswear also performed well, and John Lewis singled out British heritage brand Barbour and denim as selling especially well. Babywear also had a record week.

"The fall of Easter always requires a couple of weeks to assess our performance. We certainly did well last week and we now need to make the most of the remaining seasonal break. This requires us to be disciplined in our execution and maintain our commercial advantage," said Tim Harrison, Director, Store Development, John Lewis.
