UK's Tesco to give bag charge money to environmental projects

Tesco, the British grocer giant, has announced that it will use the money it will make from the new 5p plastic bag charge to pay for a "large number" of environmental improvement projects.

Projects like new pocket parks, sports facilities, woodland walks and community gardens are expected to benefit from the grants, and people will be able to apply for grants, or nominate online the local projects they want to get funding.

Tesco is working with Groundwork, an environmental charity, to administer the scheme, which will give grants of £8,000 to £12,000.

Rebecca Shelley, Group Communications Director for Tesco, said:
“It’s incredibly important we do our bit to reduce our impact on the environment and we’re really proud of the work we’ve done in this area, particularly in reducing waste.

“We’re going to work together with our customers to make sure the millions of pounds that will be raised from the bag charge goes towards making a real difference for our local communities.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for local environmental projects to get off the ground, and I’d like to encourage as many people as possible to get involved and nominate the projects that really matter to them.”

Tesco has also set the target to be a zero carbon business by 2050.
