Uniqlo monthly sales edge up as spring drops start well

Uniqlo has had some tough months in recent periods with the weather simply not playing ball. But the Fast Retailing-owned company said on Tuesday that it was in positive territory, at least in its core Japanese stores, during February.

Admittedly, its Japan-only sales increase wasn't huge. The company said that February 2020 same-store sales, including its online sales, increased by 0.8% year-on-year, while total sales, again including online, increased by an even smaller 0.3%.

It seems the weather is doing what it should be at the moment as the company said that it had seen a "favourable launch of spring ranges" last month.

Customer numbers also edged up and the average purchase per customer was higher as well.

That was welcome news after a mild January had dented sales of thermal clothing at the chain, and the company having cut its full-year outlook after fiscal Q1 as a whole proved challenging. The last time it issued an update, it said the year to August is now expected to see operating profit down 5% to ¥245 billion ($2.24 billion).

While Japanese sales growth has sometimes been hard to come by, it has relied heavily on fast growth in Asian neighbour China, although the coronavirus outbreak has hurt it there.

However, the firm said a few days ago that it has reopened 100+ stores in China in the past week, although 125 were still closed.
