Walmart store associates can now place item orders for customers from Walmart.com via app, allowing consumers to order and pay for online items, including those sold out or unavailable on shelves, in store.

This Dotcom Store app service, accessible through the touchscreen devices of store employees, lets customers infuse their brick-and-mortar shopping experience with the retailer's massive and online inventory. In addition, the app also lets customers pay for online purchases using cash, as well as check, credit, debit or Walmart pay.

Online items purchased in store can be shipped directly to shoppers or to their nearest Walmart store. In a press release, the retailer announced that the service is available now in nearly all 4,700 Walmart stores, with the exception of locations in Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, and will be available year-round.

“The Dotcom Store offers customers even more assortment options [...] whether that be different sizes, colors or varieties,” said Tom Ward, senior vice president of digital and central operations, Walmart U.S. “As busy families come to our stores to prepare for the holidays, they can feel confident that our associates will get them everything they need and quickly – whether it’s an item they can find on our store shelves, or online.”

To use the service, shoppers need only find a Walmart associate, who will look up requested items and place the order via the app with the desired shipping address. The customer will then receive a printed ticket, email or text with a barcode that allows them to pay at a physical register, at which point the shipping process for their order begins.

While the app currently includes all products sold and shipped by Walmart, the retailer said it plans to incorporate marketplace items sold on Walmart.com in the near future.
