Yoox has unveiled a new function for its AI-powered virtual styling experience, allowing users to develop their own digital avatar to mix and match products and styles.

Launched one year ago, Yoox Mirror is a digital styling tool available on the luxury retailer’s app. The innovation was introduced with one fashion-conscious avatar called Daisy, which was designed to model the outfits and guide customers around the suite.

Adding a new layer of interaction and personalisation, users can now create their own avatar by taking a selfie or uploading a photograph. The portraits are digitised to generate a personalised 3-D avatar, allowing fashion lovers to express their style and share their favourite looks with friends on social media.

“Before Yoox, in 1999 you could only try on items in the changing room of a boutique, then with Yoox, your home became the new changing room. And now, with Yoox Mirror, you can try on the clothes virtually,” commented Federico Marchetti, chairman and CEO of Yoox Net-A-Porter Group.

The digital styling experience displays more than 250 products per week across 9 unique fashion themes presented in a "stories" format.

According to Yoox, the app feature is powered by complex technology. Sophisticated algorithms are used to detect visual elements, such as colour, pattern, and shape, within a product image, while Deep Learning networks extract product attributes to select alternative items, which work best with each other.

Virtual reality technology fits the selected items on the 3-D avatars, bringing them to life against a range of immersive backdrops.
