A good look at the list of recent Sima awards for the North American surf industry is like a blast from the past. While the vast majority of awards went to the big groups and their subsidiaries, the prize for the best breakout brand of the year was awarded to an independent player.

Founded in 2004, Brixton received this honor given out to companies in the surf industry with sales between 1 and 5 million dollars. Brixton is all about board sports but still maintains it California identity, especially defining itself through skateboarding.

The brand is led by David Stoddard, Jason Young and Mike Chapin, three former colleagues from the U.S. skateboarding magazine Transworld. The trio first made their business debut with a collection of beanies, caps and hats (starting at 20 euros), then added t-shirts (starting at 25 euros). Brixton now offers a pretty extensive apparel collection with jackets, shirts and pants and even offers a few items for women.
