Cotton: world production down 1%

Published
Apr 24, 2015

For the 2014/2015 season, world cotton production reached 119.2 million bales. It was a small, 1% decrease compared to the previous season, which is not surprising, given that less land is being used to cultivate the crop.

Some 762,000 hectares were set aside cotton this season. The level is comparable to that in 2010/2011, although it was down 5% from last year. China and India each produced some 30 million bales.

The US Department of Agriculture estimates world cotton consumption at 111 million bales, up 2 million compared to the previous season. Growth was driven by South Asian countries (Vietnam, Bangladesh, Indonesia, India), while China was focused on its already large national stocks, and levels in the rest of the world remained stable.

The cotton trade should nevertheless reach 34.3 million bales for the 2014/2015 season - a 16% decrease compared to the previous season and a decline of 27% as compared to the 2012/2013 season.
