Femmes Fatales will focus on female fashion designers. According to the museum it will be the first exhibition in fashion history to focus exclusively on female designers.

“Now, more than ever before, fashion houses are run by women. Their designs dominate today’s catwalks and some of them also campaign for women’s rights or make explicit political statements, a perfect moment for an exhibition that focuses on strong women in fashion,” the museum said in a press release.

The exhibition will examine topics such as: Do women design differently for women than their male counterparts? What influence did they have? What does their womanhood means in terms of their creations? And what is their vision for fashion?

Work on display will include designs from both Dutch and international names, including: Fong Leng, Sheila de Vries, Iris van Herpen, Coco Chanel, Jeanne Lanvin, Elsa Schiaparelli, Mary Quant, Vivienne Westwood, Sonia Rykiel, Miuccia Prada and Maria Grazia Chiuri.

In addition, the museum said that the exhibition will also consider the lesser-known women behind the scenes of the many fashion houses, whose far-reaching influence is something that has been completely overlooked in fashion history.

Along with the exhibition, Gemeentemuseum The Hague will publish a catalogue in Dutch and English by publishing house Waanders & De Kunst, in collaboration with fashion journalist Georgette Koning.
