The Japanese designer will be holding his first major retrospective. The "Miyake Issey Exhibition: The Work of Miyake Issey” will be held from 16 March to 13 June at the National Art Center of Tokyo. It will look back at the designer's 45 years of creation.

A tribute to the 77 year old designer, born in Hiroshima in 1938, who first trained in graphic arts at the Tama University in Japan and then graduated from the elite Chambre syndicale de la Haute-Couture in Paris. Staying in Paris, he first worked at Givenchy before launching his own brand, his studio and holding his first presentation in 1973.

Noticed for his original approach to clothing and the idea that clothing is not just a question of fashion but also a form of creation connected to our lives, serving as a constant reflection of the relationship between the body, clothing and space, the designer developed a unique identity in the world of fashion.

The exhibition divided up into three spaces, A, B and C, will highlight Miyake's ideas on his approach to design, the techniques and research, all while tracing his entire career.

The first part will thus look back at the designer's first creations, the foundation of his Miyake Design Studio and the birth of some of his signature pieces, including the jumpsuit.

The second part will focus on the 80s, a period during which the designer developed new manufacturing processes for clothing and fabricated his tissues, colours, prints.

Finally, the exhibition will finish with the period from the 90s through now, with a focus on the fashion techniques developed by the designer, the innovative materials used, his series of futuristic clothing incarnated by the Starbust jumpsuits, the launch of the famous Pleats Please line, and much more.

45 years of a designer's career to be discovered until 13 June in Tokyo.
