John Lewis' sales rise 1.6% in week to May 16

British department store chain John Lewis' sales rose 1.6% to £70.32m in the week to May 16. Online sales increased by 12.1% in the period.

The second half of the week saw the best results, with sales on the Saturday up 15.1% year-on-year. Fashion sales increased by 1.8%, with menswear and sport doing especially well, up 11.7%. Home sales were up 4.1%.

Looking ahead, David Barford, Director of Selling, London & South, John Lewis, said: "This week sees the run up to another bank holiday weekend where we are well placed to optimise customer experience opportunities across all of our shopping channels."
