Moynat to open in New York in early 2016

Owned by the Arnault Group family holding, luxury brand Moynat will set up shop in New York in early 2016, at 935 Madison Avenue on the Upper East Side.

It could hardly have found a more ideal location. The entirely refurbished nineteenth century building is next door to the 1960s Marcel Breuer Building, previously home to the Whitney Museum (which moved to the Meatpacking district) and soon to become the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Met Breuer annex.

The store will cover 215 m² on two floors and will be designed by architect Gwénaël Nicolas, a star in Japan with his Curiosity Inc. architecture and design agency. Nicolas is behind the Paris stores on Rue Saint-Honoré and the Bon Marché department store.

The location marks the emergence of a new luxury district in New York, after the recent opening of Roland Mouret's flagship store (in front of the Breuer Building), German designer Tomas Maier's store at 956 Madison, and an Apple store at Madison and 74th, with art galleries Perrotin and Gagosian nearby.

The brand already had a foothold in New York with a pop-up store at Dover Street Market but now Moynat will use this first US store to showcase its leather goods and luggage collections, and will also feature special edition items conceived by Creative Director Ramesh Nair.

According to Moynat President Guillaume Davin, the brand's arrival in the US confirms its desire to attract the American market, its second largest after Asia.

While waiting for the New York opening, Moynat plans to launch its first Beijing store at the end of October. The brand's objective is to be on the map in the world's 10 great capitals, with Tokyo and Seoul also in its sights.
