The French-owned, British-manufactured heritage fabric brand Dormeuil was chosen by Italian sportswear brand Stone Island for a truly European collaboration, to create a "House Check" pattern.

Dormeuil has created fine cashmere and wool fabrics since the house was founded in 1842, and all its fabrics are produced in Huddersfield, England. Huddersfield has been synonymous with its fine woollen and worsted cloth manufacturing since the early 19th century.

For Stone Island, the initial objective when creating the brand's very own house check was to integrate the compass, Stone Island's symbol, within the horizontal and vertical lines of a plaid pattern. An intricate structure had to be created for the weave, and it was woven through a rare antique Jacquard Dobbcross fly shuttle loom. "This allowed the structure to be woven at a slower pace allowing the loom to work with a delicate touch to coupe with the complexity of the design," Stone Island states.

The Stone Island House Check was woven as a double cloth, with the compass part of the design done under the layer of the cloth and then pulled through. The resulting patterned fabric has been used for a signature hooded Stone Island jacket and a bomber jacket, both available now.
